Vampire Movies Are Hot at the Box Office

The popularity of the Twilight movie series lately has sparked a renewed interest in all things vampire. Even if you are not a fan of the book or movie series, you can't miss them all over television and in the news. It began as a figment of imagination many years ago, and has now become a movie genre with fans all over the world. The legend of vampires has existed for centuries all across the globe. Said to be evil spirits, demons, witches, or ghosts, vampires were told to live by consuming human blood. The frightening shadowy creature with fangs, possibly came from a core fear of the unknown which even today exists in most peoples' minds. Almost all cultures have vampire stories and the entertainment industry has made millions on this terrifying tale.

The best known and most seen vampire of all time is of course, Dracula. Bela Lugosi's portrayal of Dracula in 1931 was the beginning of the vampire movie empire, which carries on extensively today. Many books, movies, and television shows have told vampire tales in all sorts of variations. Even though we think of Dracula as getting the ball rolling, a film produced in 1922 called Nosferatu is most likely the true origin of all vampire movies. Starring Max Schreck, this was a silent move made in Germany. It told the tale of Braum Stoker's novel, which has been published in over 150 versions. Many experts in the vampire movie industry consistently rate Nosferatu in the top-ten in the genre.

Although there is some variety among vampire movies these days, some of the basic elements are the same. Of course, the vampire is usually the dreaded main character. All vampires need a good vampire hunter to create a story as well. According to the legends, it is commonly seen that vampires can only be killed by a wooden stake through their hearts, can't go out in the sunlight, have no reflection and are afraid of holy water and crucifixes. These early horror films had a much narrower audience than vampire movies today. Films such as The Lost Boys, Blade, Braum Stoker's Dracula and Van Helsing have attracted people who may not have been into vampire movies before. Involving a tragic love story with the vampire legend is a good fit for moviegoers everywhere. Mix in a few handsome actors, and these movies are now a popular mainstream genre.

2010 marked the tipping point for 3D movies - in terms of public interest and acceptance. According to a recent report by PricewaterhouseCoopers, at a time when overall worldwide ticket sales are decreasing, 3D sales are helping to increase the industry's revenue in fact, 3D ticket sales are currently accounting for some 50%-70% of industry revenue. This high percentage of sales is partly accounted for by the premium that can be charged on tickets for 3D features, and partly on the higher percentage of tickets sold for 3D. For example, over opening weekends, movies such as "Step Up" have been earning 84% of their revenue from 3D, when compared to earlier movies such as "Avatar" at 80% and "Final Destination: Death Trip" at 73%.

Increased UK takings
In the UK, box office takings last year increased by 8% to a total of £1.076 billion on the back of the success of 3D releases such as "Toy Story 3" and "Alice in Wonderland". The UK's 725 cinemas have some 3,650 screens, of which around 700 have digital projection systems, most of which can show 3D films.

Asia outstrips even the US
If you want to see the most dramatic growth from the 3D movie phenomenon, you need to look east. In Hong Kong, the first half of 2010 saw box office receipts increase by 20%, while ticket sales were actually down by 2%. In South Korea, the story was similar, with a 15% increase in revenue on 4% fewer admissions. The biggest growth of all, of course, was in China. Box office takings doubled year-on-year, with "Avatar" alone accounting for 60% of the increase. Premium priced tickets for "Alice in Wonderland" and "Clash of the Titans" also made significant contributions. In Japan, box office revenues increased by 7.7% on an admissions rise of just 0.6%.

'True 3D' or 2D to 3D conversion?
The worldwide success of "Avatar" has appeared to whet the appetite of audiences for movies that have been conceived as a 3D experience, rather than made as a 3D version of what was originally conceived as a 2D movie.

Star Wars

Lego Star Wars has quite the interesting history when it comes to the fact that the game entertains children everywhere. It all stems from the popular plastic building blocks that can be used to build cars, space ships, buildings, and whatever a child's imagination can think up. Anyone under the age of 60 has most likely played with Legos, so that means that many of the children playing with them today have grandparents who once used their imaginations to do the same exact thing. The Lego saga began in 1932 in Billund, Denmark, where a carpenter by the name of Ole Kirk Kristiansen began a new business that made wooden toys, stepladders, and ironing boards. What no one realized at that time was that Legos had been born.

It was in 1934 that Kristiansen created the name Lego, which is derived from "leg godt," which are the Danish words for "play well." However, in Latin, the word Lego means "I put together." Unfortunately in 1942, the plant burned down and Kristiansen had to rebuild, but just two years later, Kristiansen's plant purchased an injection molding machine that created plastic toys, but he was yet to invent the building blocks.

It was in 1949 that the Automatic Binding Brick was introduced for sale only in Denmark and looked like a tiny plastic brick with eight or four studs. However, by 1950 the Lego accounted for half of the company's business. From then on, the Lego began spreading around the world and through the years had developed various themes such as sets that focused just on building cars or on just building buildings. The possibilities were endless.

However, the Legos of today are much different than the Legos both we and our parents played with. Our children are playing with Lego theme parks, there are Lego themed movies, and there are even Lego themed video games that are based off of particular toy lines created by Lego. One of those toy lines is Lego Star Wars, which later led to the Lego Star Wars video game. The video game was first released in 2005 and is based during the prequel trilogy to the actual Star Wars Trilogy that began in the late 1970's and early 1980's. However, the game was actually released a month before the last of the Star Wars films was released.
